FPS. RPG. PLATFORMER. MOBA. MMORPG.
From the dawn of video games genres have existed to sort, promote and influence designs. However as games progress the conventional categories are becoming outdated and defining a games' genre doesn't entirely sum up the game in itself.
I believe a whole new system is needed, perhaps one that utilises more than one choice with a parent category. For example you may have an action adventure that is also a first person shooter whilst also being educational.
Using this system you could also include if a game is story based, simply exists for the multiplayer aspects or has a level of replay-ability.
Some examples are games that fit into more than one genre, such as Fallout 3 (Shooter, RPG) or Valkyrie Chronicles (Tactical Roleplaying, Shooter).
There will always be new games that push past the boundaries however with a new system there is a definite opportunity to define a games traits further as to better reach its target audience and as a consumer, better understand the experience you are purchasing.
